Head Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach
Athens Academy, a premier co-educational, non-sectarian day school of 945 students in grades K3-12, seeks a Varsity Head Boys’ Basketball Coach to begin in August, 2019. Candidates who wish to infuse their talents and develop the entire program over the long term are sought; we are not looking for a short-term coach. A search committee has been appointed by the Head of School to assist in this search.
Athens Academy seeks a leader who exudes the following qualities in his or her work with young men: integrity, discipline, patience, enthusiasm, excellent communication skills, and inspirational leadership. The search committee and the School will seek candidates with demonstrated professionalism who inspire those around them to achieve at a higher level. This opportunity includes developing and engaging with players at all levels of the program in and out of season. Leading and “coaching the coaches” at all levels of the boys program is expected. Strong communication skills will be important, as there is a talented pool of players coming up through the school. The person selected will assist in the school’s important work of developing people of character. The mission statement is as follows: “Athens Academy seeks excellence with honor in the educational and personal experience of each student.” Each member of the Athens Academy team seeks to achieve excellence each and every day, especially in its four pillars: academics, arts, athletics, and service.
Athens Academy is a competitive school with a healthy, vibrant family culture and a commitment to academic and personal excellence. Situated on a beautiful campus of 154 acres, five minutes outside of Athens, Georgia, the school includes 21 buildings ranging from the Harrison Center for Preschool and the Arts, to the Bertelsmann Media Center, to the Sinkwich Spartan Center. Specifically for basketball, the school offers varsity and junior varsity teams along with two middle school teams comprised of 7th and 8th grade. The school enjoys two gymnasiums for its basketball programs; one facility is used primarily for practices and the other is used for both practices and competitions. The girls and boys programs rotate use of the gymnasiums each week during the season.
Interscholastically, the school is a member of the Georgia High School Association and competes in Class A, Region 8.
The committee will accept materials from interested candidates until July 31, 2019. A completed packet will include the following:
- Cover letter expressing interest in our school and this leadership position
- Resume, including details of basketball and teaching experience
- Names of three references
The school will hold all applicants’ names in strict confidence until visits to the campus take place or upon candidates approval. Accordingly, the school will communicate with selected finalists when these visits will occur. At that time, the school cannot guarantee the confidentiality of the finalists. This is an important position in Athens Academy’s community, and to ensure a quality visit for the candidates, many people will be involved in the process. Interested candidates are encouraged to send their materials to:
Kevin Petroski, Athletic Director
1281 Spartan Lane
Athens, GA 30606
The school looks forward to hearing from qualified candidates, and to naming a Head Coach when the right candidate is identified and vetted.
